We know Texas ain’t just about football.

The University of Texas Sport Taekwondo Team will be hosting the Southwest Conference Taekwondo Fight-Offs once again. After last year’s success, we will be doing it bigger and better. This competition will be all about Olympic style sparring.

From college teams like Texas A&M, Baylor, Sam Houston, Rice, national team members, and those ambitious athletes who want to prove themselves, we have some serious match-ups.  Most of these schools are preparing for National Collegiates in April and have been training hard throughout the year. It’s time to test their skill level against the best.

A ranking system will be implemented into the competition for future Southwest Conference competitions. Certified WTF Officials will be running the matches. There will also be a certified medical trainer on board to provide assistance.

Eligibility to Compete:

- Must be at least 17 years old to compete
- College participants must bring identification of enrollment in a university to the event*
- Complete online application before the deadline, tba

*If the participant fails to present a form of ID that proves enrollment in college, the individual will have to pay the Non-College Competitor’s ticket price at the door

ALL SPARRING:

Rules: WTF-AAU  2 points for head shots in all divisions. One point for body shots.

The Gap and Cap rule will be applied:

Gaining a 7-point lead or when a competitor scores a maximum of 12 points the match will be stopped and a winner declared.

EQUIPMENT:

  • Clean uniform
  • Protective arm guard and shin guards made of foam rubber or vinil covered,
  • Protective cup
  • Chest guards
  • Mouth piece

UPDATE: We now have a Media page! Check out Texas Newswatch’s interview of the team on Exercise and Studying which aired on Time Warner channel 16 on November 19th (starts 3/4 into video clip)

A&M Fightoffs was a success! The UT Taekwondo Team was finally able test their skills on the mat. There is no doubt that each team member win or lose was able to come out of this competition with pride from representing Texas.

Coming out of this competition, the team can now focus on their weaknesses and build on it to fully develop their game. With a fresh sense of confidence, the team will continue to train for the big dance, Collegiates, in the Spring. Great job guys!

HAPPY THANKSGIVING!!
