Hey Longhorns,
This week’s updates and big news can be found below!

New Updates

1. UT Dual
Today was the conclusion of our dual series between Texas Universities. All of our fighters distinguished themselves with at least one victory. We hope this event continues to grow in strength and numbers through future seasons.

2. Collegiates
In a mere two weeks, our team members will be going to Boston to compete at MIT for National Collegiate Taekwondo. This is their biggest competition of the season which has schools from California, the East coast, and all across America. Come be a part of these final two weeks of preparation and kick off our fighters to an epic conclusion.

3. Tip of the Week
This might seem to be a silly piece of advice but this week should be all about mental focus. Getting back into the swing of things after spring break can be difficult but with enough conscious effort, you can make that extra jump in skill.

4. Kicks 4 Kids
We will be training the students the basics of sparring and ending the semester with a competition! The gear has been a huge success and we’re looking forward to more positive news! We will be hosting a tournament on April 20th for the tots to show off their skills. Please email texastaekwondo@gmail.com if you’re interested in donating or helping out for this event.

Ongoing Information

5. Officer Update
The spring semester is always an exciting round of tournaments and training for the “big dance” at MIT this April. Currently our officers are focusing on organizing for collegiates, K4K tournament, and the end of year banquet. If you’d like to get involved with the planning, please contact the officers via our gmail account (texastaekwondo@gmail.com)
6. Practice
We have kicking practice every Tuesday and Thursday from 7-9pm in RSC 1.138. We also have a TA format practice on Saturday from 12-2 to work on specific problems. However, spring season usually sends us across the state (and nation) for weekend competitions so check our competition schedule for details. We can always use more training partners so share the news about this activity we all love.
General Information

7. Anonymous Response Form
See anywhere we could be improved? Have ideas for team training? We need your feedback! Fill out this form to let us know how we can better serve you. This week’s updates and big news can be found below!

New Updates

1. Spring Break
As you’ve probably already noticed, next week starts the fabulous school holiday of spring break. While we encourage you to catch up on your sleep and get some well deserved rest, this isn’t the time for slacking on the workouts. With collegiates around the corner, our team captain Ray will be providing work outs for team members.

2. Tip of the Week
Take proper care of your body. If you think you might have a sprained or pulled muscle/tendon/ligament, don’t hesitate to get some medical tape and wrap up. If you don’t take care of the problem early on, it’ll only cause more trouble down the road.

3. Kicks 4 Kids
We will be training the students the basics of sparring and ending the semester with a competition! The gear has been a huge success and we’re looking forward to more positive news! Expect news regarding the end-of-year tournament to be released soon. Please email texastaekwondo@gmail.com if you’re interested in donating or helping out.

4. March 3rd Explore UT
We owe a huge thank you to all the students who came out to volunteer for the Explore UT and Volleyball Fundraisers. Thanks to everyone’s hard work, we were able to raise a sizable amount of money. We want to send some extra love to Tina Tran, Jonalyn Herce, Court Flato, Martin Huang, and Jeremie Vega who volunteered over 8 hours! Y’all are amazing!

Ongoing Information

This week’s updates and big news can be found below!

New Updates

1. Southwest Conference Fight-Offs
Texas Taekwondo is proud to announce the Southwest Conference Fight-offs were a huge hit! We had competitors from Baylor, A&M, and several local competitors as well. We’d like to say a huge thank you to all our alumni and friends who came out and helped make this event possible. We couldn’t have done it without you! Check out our group picture and attached alumni newsletter.
The results of the fight-offs are as follows:

School=points.
Places # of 1st, 2nd, 3rd

UT = 193.5
places 9, 3, 0

Baylor = 53
places 1, 2, 1

UT(alumni) = 40
places 1, 1, 1

A&M = 39
places 0, 3, 1

MooDoHe = 19.5
places 1, 0, 0

UTSA = 14
places 0, 1, 0

UTA = 13.5
places 0, 1, 0

Independent = 10
places 0, 0, 1

NAT = 7
places 0, 0, 1

2. Tip of the Week
Stay hydrated. It’s easy to fall in the trap of getting nervous and thinking so much about your game plan that you forget to drink water, but serious workouts need to be fueled on copious amounts of liquid.

3. Kicks 4 Kids
We will be training the students the basics of sparring and ending the semester with a competition! Just this week we had our shipment of gear come in which has all the students very excited! Please email texastaekwondo@gmail.com if you’re interested in donating or helping out.

4. March 3rd Volunteer Opportunity
To help the team/club pay for banquet, new gear, and everything else we love- come volunteer this next saturday! We’ll be selling concessions in the Rec Sports Center to a 5th grade volleyball camp. Sign up at the link and shifts will be distributed shortly.

New Updates

1. Southwest Conference Fight-Offs
Texas Taekwondo will be hosting the annual Southwest Conference Fight-offs this Saturday, February 25th from 10-5pm. We’ll have teams and organizations from across the state so it’s sure to be an exciting day! To sign up to fight or volunteer, go to: http://utsporttkd.com/fight-offs-application/

To see the official Facebook event, go to: http://www.facebook.com/events/347274958637996/

2. Tabling Event THIS WEEK
To prep for our big Saturday tournament (see item 1), we’ll be tabling at Gregory this Wednesday to get the word out. Please go to this link in order to sign up to help: http://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/viewform?formkey=dFIKbDg4U0ItamtINy1uN09JaFZhd2c6MQ

3. Tip of the Week
The major focus of our strategy is to always apply pressure to the opponent. While checks and movement (along with the cut) are the best way to keep your opponent on their toes, you also need to remember to always go first. Make them have to react to your decisions and not the other way around.

4. Kicks 4 Kids
We will be training the students the basics of sparring and ending the semester with a competition! Please email texastaekwondo@gmail.com if you’re interested in donating or helping out. Also, we will not run class this week as the Elementary School has Monday off.

Since our big focus this week has mostly been distance, I want to make a point regarding that topic. Most of the work of getting into distance is by using checks and motions. It’s often one of the first points of technique to go but is vital for keeping your opponent on their toes.

Hey Team,
This’ll be the last official weekly email until we return from the break. Keep kicking it over the break and we’ll see you in January. Anyways, we’ve got some big announcements below with things you need to know to be in the know.

1. Anonymous Response Form
See anywhere we could be improved? Have ideas for team training? We need your feedback! Fill out this form to let us know how we can better serve you. It’s completely anonymous so don’t feel shy about being completely honest. The form can be found here: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/viewform?formkey=dHpBNEt0VHZVYVR3b3dwRUdoT3lGNXc6MQ

2. Tip of the Week (or Month in this case…)
Keep motivated! I know it’s difficult to continue kicking, running, and lifting when at home. The temptation to sleep, drink, and be merry is one we all face during these winter months. But right now is one of your best opportunities to push beyond the limits you set on yourself over the semester. Think of all the other tkd teams who are getting slower and lazier while we just keep getting better. And if you ever need some outside motivation, remember we’re all here to cheer each other on!

3. Texas LoneStar Dual @ A&M
A big round of applause for all our fighters this past weekend. In a fledgling tradition, we will be having biannual tournaments with Baylor and A&M- dubbed Texas LoneStar Duals. This past weekend we travelled to College Station and fought to procure the title of tournament champions. UT came in first with 84 points. A&M secured second place with 78 points and Baylor came in third with 42 points. Our individual fighters who garnered us a win include: Jonalyn Herce, Melissa Benavides, Sadie Witkowski, Luiz Garcia, Jeremie Vega, Kyu Hur, Court Flato, Raymund Lee, and Martin Huang.

4. Winter Break Goals
Team Captain Raymund Lee will be sending out a workout guide and goals to be met over the break. Remember, it will be required to run a seven minute mile by the time you get back from break so don’t fall into laziness!

5. Socials- Secret Santa
Secret Santa and the ensuing potluck were a huge success again this year. Thank you everyone who participated to continue our winter tradition. A special thanks to everyone who cooked just for the event. Hope the rest of your holiday is just as merry!

6. Kicks 4 Kids
We have now come down to our final class with the kids of UT Elementary. November 28th, we’ll be hosting their final class which will also serve as a demonstration for their parents. We’d like to thank everyone who donated their time to see this exciting project to completion.

7. Officer Update
Our officers are a hard working lot who are trying to grow the Taekwondo program to new heights. Currently, they are doing a teaching program for UT elementary students once a week on mondays as well as organizing “fight-offs” with local gyms. They are also making a push for more fundraising events. Offers of assistance are always welcome and encouraged, particularly if you have a contact with another school interested in some friendly sparring matches. We will be sending out officer applications before the end of the semester for those interested in serving in an officer position next semester.

8. Membership Forms + Dues
Membership forms can be obtained from any of the officers and must be completely filled out and returned. Along with the filled out form you need your insurance information and dues. If you chose to write a check, they should be made out to “Texas Taekwondo.” Once your form and dues have been turned in, we will add you to the Texas Taekwondo Facebook group where our lessons and conversations are documented with photos and videos. If you haven’t turned in your paperwork by the third class day, we can’t allow you to kick with us for liability reasons.

9. Try Outs
Stay tuned for tryouts next semester and please contact Coach Joe Van or Team Captain Raymund Lee for any questions.
10. Practice
We have discontinued having kicking practice every Tuesday and Thursday from 7-9pm in RSC 1.138 until the end of the break. However, we’ll be back January 17th and we encourage you to spread the word to all your friends and bring them along. We can always use more training partners and it’s a great way to share an activity we all love.
